Tools Tab

Choose: Edit > Preferences > Tools

The Tools tab lets you specify whether you want to automatically update VMware Tools on Windows and Linux guest systems when a new version becomes available. New versions become available when you install a new version of Workstation on the host machine.

Automatic upgrades work for versions of VMware Tools included in Workstation 5.5 and above (build 29772 and above). After the upgrade is complete, if you are logged in to the guest, a restart prompt appears for 30 seconds. If you are not logged in, the operating system restarts without prompting.

 

Note On Linux, you must be running Workstation as root in order to change the settings on the Tools tab of the preferences editor.

If you do not select the check box on this tab, you will need to upgrade VMware Tools manually. In this case, the status bar displays a message when a new version is available, and to install the update, use the same procedure that you used for installing VMware Tools the first time. To change the VMware Tools upgrade settings for a particular virtual machine, and override the settings shown in this Preferences dialog box, select the virtual machine and then choose VM > Settings > Options > Tools.
